I’ve been quietly pursuing the craft of filmmaking for the better part of a decade. My first screenplay was written in a ramshackle home with a shaky foundation and leaky pipes that, in hindsight, mirrored my own writing ability. But like the space itself, those imperfections weren’t enough to keep me from valuing what I’d found: a place where expression could happen freely, at any hour… or at least until the landlord showed up.
Writing gave me a way to understand. That’s what good stories do.
Advancing my career in film hasn’t been without its challenges. The veneer of a Hollywood life shines bright, and that glimmer is often just enough to make you take your eye off the ball…or at the very least, mix metaphors.
What I lacked for a long time was a sense of community - people as focused on the craft as I was. Without it, filmmaking inevitably drifts into abstraction. It becomes an endless loop of, “One day I’m going to…”
Only in the past three years have I begun to truly escape that cycle.
And I made myself a promise: if I ever did, I’d do what I could to help others stay focused too. That’s what this Substack is about.
I wanted to create a space where conversations with filmmakers could be made accessible, affordable, and above all, effective. And so - almost like I’ve been dropped back into that same dump of a rental where I first discovered my love for the screen - I’m starting again, with an empty room full of promise.
My wish is that you’ll consider subscribing so that I can find some furniture for this place.
A few chairs around this joint might give you just enough comfort to stick around and join these investigations into the minds of filmmakers, so the language of cinema can spread further. At least here in my home state of Alabama…
Thanks for being here.
